One
of the very first things tourists will see on first arriving in Vietnam
are those ubiquitous conical hats.
On cyclists, boat rowers, vendors, and even on those prettily dressed
tourist guides, the conical hat, also known as no地 ba段 in Vietnamese
has become some kind of a symbol of Vietnam that a picture of the
Vietnamese is never complete unless they wore one of these hats.
Actually,
the no地 ba段痴 design isn稚 exactly for aesthetic reasons. Most of the
Vietnam is made up of farm lands with people working under the scorching
heat day in and day out. The hats themselves are lightweight, water
resistant, and simply made by plaiting palm leaves. They can be easily
seen on the heads of peasants and market workers as with the pretty
young ladies of the tourism industry.
It
also offers a little bit of modesty and privacy. Having the wide brim
that it does, the Vietnamese, particularly their women, have the
opportunity to unobtrusively study their surroundings. To some, it may
seem a little isolating. But if the practicality and naturally modest
nature of the Vietnamese are taken into account, the no地 bai痴 design
is just perfect.
An attraction in its own right, these hats make the Vietnamese seem more
mysterious and exotic to most foreign visitors. A practically integral
part of daily Vietnam street life, the no地 bai, is definitely more than
just a broad cone hat.
