Sleeping and Eating in Phuket

by: Debbie Salcedo

Since Phuket is one of the biggest tourist spots in Thailand, it is not surprising that the place is also filled with charming places to sleep and eat in. Visitors will surely appreciate the variety of places available.

Following are just some of the places where travelers can stay the night and grab a meal in Phuket town:

Talang Guest House

This guest house has spacious rooms with high ceilings and a Western style bathroom. Rooms open out to a breezy gallery for sunset views. A continental breakfast of coffee, toast, and fruit is included in the basic room rate.

On On

This 1929 fortress is really quite old and its age shows in its flimsily divided rooms and at times leaky faucet baths. In the common areas are signs of faded glamour, none of which is retained in the rooms that posed as the Khao San flophouse in the filming of The Beach.

The downstairs café is located in the car park. As a bonus the place offers Internet access. Given these conditions, the place is frequented and even preferred by backpackers.

Pengman

Above a Chinese restaurant this modern building provides basic beds without charm or bugs.

Phuket cuisine is a mix of Thai, Malay and Chinese with some exceptional twists on the country’s standard dishes.

Ran Jee Nguat

Four doors down from the corner of Th Dibuk this long-running restaurant and is considered an institution in its kind. It serves Phuket’s most famous dish: kha-nom jiin naam yaa phuuket, Chinese noodles in a pureed fish and curry sauce, with fresh vegetables.

Nai Yao

This restaurant is pretty much austere when it comes to decor, but a constant stream of Thais fills the harshly lit space with the intention of eating well. More like a curry than soup, their specialty dish tom yam haeng is reputedly very very good.

Other popular choices include the clams and haw mok tha-leh (steamed seafood curry wrapped in banana leaf)

Mae porn

A popular open-air corner joint, Mae Porn is an easy place near the guesthouses to grab a bite after a long bus ride.

Th Ranong

The day market Th Ranong, just off Fountain Circle, sells fresh fruit. At night the area is just as crammed with vendors selling grilled skewers of meat and seafood. When you pick out your order, hand it to the vendor so they can heat it up; point to the vats of sauce on the counter if you like spicy dipping sauces. A few vegetarian places can also be found in Th Ranong.
