Title: "Manila Revisted"
About: Travel and Tourism Philippines

Modern, smoke-filled, and every road stuck with traffic jams. These are the usual comments about the City of Manila, the Philippine capital.

While it is true that modernization hasn’t helped much in complementing the few remaining colonial style houses left in the city, Manila is not without its hidden charms for the patient tourist.

INTRAMUROS

Stepping inside Manila’s walled city that served as a fortress during the Second World War, Intramuros takes you on a trip back in time when the roads where cobbled and the architecture is decidedly colonial.

Rebuilt as a fort by the Spanish in 1590, the area became home to 15 churches and 6 monasteries.

Most of the houses and roads were demolished during the time American General Douglas MacArthur used the walled city as a base.

Notable sites to visit inside Intramuros are Rizal Shrine Museum, the ruins of Fort Santiago, Manila Cathedral, the monastery of San Agustin, and Chinese museum Bahay Tsinoy (House of the Chinese Filipino.)

RIZAL PARK

A park constructed in recognition of the country’s Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Rizal Park is often filled with families out to enjoy a lazy weekend afternoon or lovers taking a stroll in the open lawns and ornamental gardens.

In the north-west corner of the park is Rizal's execution site, marked by dramatic statues of the event. The park also features a planetarium, a Chinese and Japanese garden, fountains, a floral clock and an area for roller-skaters.

Separating Intramuros and the city beyond from the hustle and bustle of tourist area Malate, Manilenyos have found Rizal park to be a peaceful respite from the noise and fast pace of city living.

NATIONAL MUSEUM

For a glimpse of Philippine art at its best, a trip to the National Museum found near the Old Congress Building in Manila.

ERMITA and MALATE

Streets lined with bars, restaurants and dance clubs, the Ermita and Malate districts are Manila’s party central for the younger denizens of the night. Remedios Circle, Nakpil, and Orosa Streets offer everything from fine dining, dancing, and bars for all kinds of gender persuasion.

CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES (CCP)

Housing two theaters, two art galleries, a library, and a museum, the CCP can be found on the seaward side of Roxas Boulevard.
