Title: "Penang: Chinese meets British"
About: Travel and Tourism Malaysia

Penang is the state located on the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The state is famous for its traditions and customs, from traditional villas to the simple, but yet elegant shop-houses of a bygone era. Penang is rich with architectural heritage.

The capital of Penang, George Town, is the third largest city in Malaysia. Central Georgetown is a largely a Chinese City with bicycle rickshaws, Chinese inspired shophouses, elaborate temples and stately colonial buildings.

Each building bears the stamp of different foreign influences from its colorful past, while its cultural legacy is also evident in the region’s food, clothing, houses and modes of transport-making the state a multi-hued potpourri of art and culture.

What to do/ see

When in George Town, it is recommended to visit the birthplace and gallery of Penang’s favorite son, P. Ramlee

P. Ramlee is a local hero of international fame. From his early humble beginnings, which gradually evolved into a glamorous life in the limelight, this celebrity has remained a home-grown boy made good.

Immortalized in living memory, his songs and movies continue to reflect social relevance for the benefit of generations of Malaysian’s in Southeast Asia and around the world.

Restored and refurbished as a folk museum, the typical quaint Penang House is located along P. Ramlee Road and is a actual birthplace of this celebrity. It was here where the roots of P. Ramlee’s initial achievement became to sprout, and where his imagination began to soar out, gaining far reaching influence in the entertainment world of Malaysia.

How to get to Penang

The international airport of Penang is located 20 km from Georgetown City. By road, Penang is connected to most major highways (the north-south highway and the east-west highway) as well as via the Penang Bridge. By Ferry, mainland Penang is accessible from Butterworth for both passengers and vehicles.

How to get around

To travel around Penang, you can take a taxi, an air-conditioned bus or the traditional rickshaw or trishaw.
