Whether for the casual tourist or the seasoned backpacker, India
provides a host of hiking and trekking opportunities that will surely
keep you preoccupied.
Some of the places ideal for trekking are the gentle slopes of the
Indian Himalayas, the regions covering the state of Himachal Pradesh,
the Uttarkand, Kashmir and Sikkim, Kedarnath and Amarnath Yatra, Vaishno
Devi pilgrimage, Manosarovar Yatra, Kulu and Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh
India
also has a number of wildlife sanctuaries like those in Kerala that are
fun to explore, and if you do get tired with all the walking around, you
could always be adventurous and take one of the elephant back rides.
These rides are also ideal for visitors wanting to relax. Since the
elephants move slowly it gives you the opportunity to really take in the
view and focus the camera for some pictures.
Many visitors have found this experience of slowly moving through the
jungle amidst the echoing sounds of birds and other wild animals simply
incredible.
For those who want to take it a notch further, camel safaris are
organized through the Thar Desert. These safaris normally begin at Khuri
and end before nightfall. With these camel safaris, you will be
transported to an altogether different world. Typical sights here are
the sand dunes of Jaisalmer and Bikaner, the heritage resorts, an oasis
where visitors are treated to old time village hospitality and several
remote forts.
For adventurers wanting to rough it up further, India also offers many
mountaineering and rock climbing opportunities. These are usually done
during the months of April to November when the weather is ideal.
Some of the mountaineering places for the extreme backpacker are the
high altitude regions of Kumaon, Garhwal and Ladakh, Rajrambha and Panch
Chulhi in Kumaon and the peaks of the Eastern Himalayas.

For those after more relaxing climbs, you can go rock climbing at the
hills of Aravalli, Mumbra and Dudha in Western Ghats, Rohtang Pass in
Himachal Pradesh, Sonmarg in Kashmir and Gangotri in Garhwal.
