Cool
climate, secluded waterfalls and lush jungle vistas are what may be
found at the French hill station of Bokor. Generally deserted
save for the ranger station, the place could have a certain “ghost-town”
feel that could give the impression of desertion just a day ago.
The
atmosphere of the Bokor Palace Hotel could give more nervous
tourists the “willies” with an atmosphere curiously reminiscent of the
movie “The Shining.” Visitors who persevere however, are rewarded with a
magnificent view of the jungle running to the sea in the distance from
the once grand tea time terrace of the Hotel.
A
few kilometers from the old hill station are the Popokvil Falls.
A great spot to cool down in after a hot day, visitors may also opt to
go up the walking trail to the old hill station where rangers may be
hired for guided tours. Pretty good for keeping track of beautiful
viewpoints and an ear out for the odd tiger.
The
hill station is part of the Bokor National Park, one of
Cambodia’s better-protected areas accessible for the small fee of about
US$5.00. Basic beds are also available at the ranger station as well as
basic meals like noodles and drinks. It can get pretty chilly at night
so a change of warm clothing is recommended. Visitors are also advised
that electricity in the station goes off at 9pm.
Bokor is best visited as a day trip from Kampot but can be done
in a longer day from Sihanoukville. Guesthouses like the Mealy
Chenda and Red Snapper in Sihanoukville also arrange tours to
Bokor.
Bokor is about 41km from Kampot and 132km from Sihanoukville. It is best
for tourists wishing to visit Bokor to arrange transportation from
either of the two towns. A moto from Kampot to Bokor costs about
US$10.00. First time bikers are advised to also hire a car or moto as
the road can be rather tough to negotiate.
